In our algorhytmically refreshed ‘user-friendly’ universe, past reboots into present, representations resist resolution, images circulate into surfaces and leaving almost no place for surprises. Can images continue to appear as polysemous vernacular, speculative in meaning? Where to look for fresh and versatile articulation modalities through images, if there are any?

In a famous television interview, Hannah Arendt says ‘I must understand, that is why I continue to write.’ ‘Place an Image / Place in Image’ the third seminar exhibition of Seen By series, a collaboration between new media and photography classes of UdK and Museum für Fotografie, invites Musquiqui Chihying, Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze, Cornelia Herfurtner, Daniel Reuter, Dierk Saathoff, Kristof Trakal, Milos Trakilovic and Till Wittwer to debate place of developing artistic subjectivities in image production framed by a chain reaction built environment of emotion, apparatus, reality and speculation through their varied practice. Abstracting image as site and gesture of criticality, the exhibition highlights the agency of topographic imagination as an affective research tool that recurs in the process of different works.

With her ambivalent constellation of domestic objects and photographs of architectural propositions, Cornelia Herfurtner proposes to define the exhibition as a place of ‘Slip’ to the daily visual economy of the institution.‘Radical Privacy’ is a tactical setting Kristof Trakal prepared for viewing his photo-albums he has been compiling for some time ‘to create entities that are instantly yours and without compromise referential to yourself.’ In his new work ‘m/Other’ Milos Trakilovic questions how subjectivities come into being by discussing the politics of representation, attempting to re-imagine the maternal image. Daniel Reuter’s new performance ‘Man muss wohl essen’ not only addresses production of truth about what is good for humans in nature and who is allowed to eat that but also researches what is involved in the post-representational moment of a performance that has happened. In his photographic series, Dierk Saathoff produces broken and open associations of past urban memories responding to the accumulative symbolic capital of "being there" . Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze humorously questions if there is a place for artistic gesture in a random algorhythmic image selection with his performative installation. Musquiqui Chihying’s ironical optimism performs a slip between original and copy, realizes a childhood dream come true as a setting in the exhibition space. Till Wittwer’s text-work ‘The Starchitectural Industrial Complex. A Forensic Role Play’ plays with the idea of forensic architecture as an alternative analysis method for the exhibition and its site.

During its 3 months period, the seminar that led to‘Place an Image/Place in Image’ plans to explore tension between gesture and site further with different invited guests, publication launches and exhibition readings organized in collaboration with curator Övül Durmusoglu and participating artists.
